Having Fun While Removing Window Frames

Replacing drafty, old single pane windows and their window frames is a fantastic way to update the looks of the home while keeping people more comfortable and reducing the amount of energy used for heating and cooling. Having fun while making this energy efficient change is easy.  If a person knows which end of the hammer to use, that person can replace window frames. All the do-it-yourselfer needs is a bit of courage, the right tools and information. By learning these simple tricks, anyone can afford this attention-getting home improvement.

Courage comes from encouragement and secret knowledge. The encouragement may be a memory of past problems tackled and solved or encouraging words from a loved one, friend or neighbor. The secret knowledge is to know a contractor can be hired to finish removing window frames if needed.

As life does not mimic TV shows, no sledgehammers are needed or recommended for removing window frames. In fact the only tools needed are a flat pry bar, screwdriver, utility knife, hammer and a reciprocating saw. Total investment in tools is minimal as the reciprocating saw can be rented for the project.

Removing window frames is simply undressing the window until the unit holding the glass in place is exposed. Just like removing clothes before going to bed, the interior and exterior trims are carefully pried away until the frames are uncovered. To protect the paint job, using a sharp utility knife to cut through built-up paint around the trim reduces damage. Carefully inserting the flat, narrow edge of the pry bar under the trim piece and gently pushing down on the bar lifts the wood. Using a screwdriver to hold the wood up while the bar is inserted in a different location makes it easy to work from one side to the other while removing any nails along the way. When the frames are exposed, the pry bar is inserted between the frame and walls studs to locate nails holding the unit in place. The reciprocating saw cuts all the nails freeing the window units. Newer frames may have a special exterior lip nailed to the outside; these nails need to be removed also. Once the unit is free, it can be detached by gently tapping it with a hammer.

Do-it-yourselfers who tackle replacing window frames reap rewards three ways. These homeowners have a fantastic new look, reduced energy bills and the satisfaction of doing the work themselves. All it takes is courage, the right tools and information.
